X-Men #1 is Already Better Than All of HoXPoX

The X-Men find themselves in a whole new world of possibility… and things have never been better! Jonathan Hickman (HOUSE OF X, POWERS OF X, SECRET WARS) and superstar artist Leinil Yu (NEW AVENGERS, CAPTAIN AMERICA) reveal the saga of Cyclops and his hand-picked squad of mutant powerhouses!

X-Men #1 opens with s scene of Professor Xavier first giving Scott Summers his ruby quartz glasses before jumping right into the post-HoXPoX action, as Cyclops and Storm invade an O.R.C.H.I.S. facility to put a stop to their mutant-murdering ways. As the forces retreat into the compound, Magneto and Polaris arrive for backup. Base leader Dr. Mars declares that their research not go to waste, so they inject themselves with a serum that turns them into apes. Magneto takes care of them as the other three X-Men descend further into the compound and find a bunch of mutants held in stasis tubes, along with one posthuman subject. She teleports away though, and the X-Men bring the freed mutants back to Krakoa, delivering them to Dr. Cecelia Reyes.

TheThe X-Men have conquered death. They’ve established a sanctuary nation state for all mutants. They have biological kitchen appliances that automatically clean and dry dishes with antibacterial green goo.

This is the brave new world of Dawn Of X, Marvel’s branding for six new titles spotlighting different aspects of mutant life on Krakoa and beyond. The story begins with this week’s X-Men #1, written by Hickman with art by Leinil Francis Yu, inker Gerry Alanguilan, and colorist Sunny Gho. And after months of tearing up the foundations of the mutant world, the biggest surprise of the issue might be how fun it is.

PREVIOUSLY, ON X-MEN
Jonathan Hickman has created a paradise for Marvel’s mutants with his run on the X-Men comics, beginning in July with the companion miniseries House Of X and Powers Of X (read as “Powers Of Ten”). Working with the all-star team of artists Pepe Larraz and R.B. Silva, colorist Marte Gracia, letterer Clayton Cowles, and designer Tom Muller, Hickman has redefined life for mutants over the past three months, telling a centuries-spanning story of an oppressed people doing whatever it takes to avoid inevitable suffering.

For decades, X-Men comics have rehashed the same ideological conflicts with slight variations. Grant Morrison’s run in the early ’00s was revolutionary in how it explored the ways mutant culture diverged from humans, but then Marvel wiped out the mutant population and erased all that progress. Hickman starts his X-Men story by going even further than Morrison, giving mutants their own safe, sacred space to reach their full potential as a people. How does this all happen? Moira X, a revived and retconned Moira MacTaggert, who is now a mutant with the power to resurrect and relive her life from the same birth point.

Marvel today revealed the covers for X-Men comics shipping in November 2019. November is the second month of the Dawn of X, the new X-Men line announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. The line launches following the conclusion of Jonathan Hickman's House of X and Powers of X miniseries. Hickman writes the flagship X-Men series. The other five ongoings are Excalibur, Marauders, New Mutants, Fallen Angels, and X-Force.

“House of X and Powers of X lay the groundwork for a whole new world of X-Men stories for years to come, and the Dawn of X books are the promise of that new world come to life,” said X-Men Senior Editor Jordan D. White when the books were announced. “They are the start of the new era that will change how we think of the X-Men and the kinds of stories we tell with them. It all begins here.”

These new series are said to kick off the first phase of Jonathan Hickman’s massive multi-year plan for the X-Men, redefining the characters and franchise for a new era. They are said to be perfect jumping-on points for new and long-time X-Men fans. Keep reading to see details for each of the six new series.

Marvel announces the future of the X-Men with six new titles at SDCC 2019

On Saturday, Marvel Comics revealed the long-awaited shake-up of the X-Men line, billed as a fundamental change of eras in the long-running superhero epic.

Before the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con announcement, all fans have known is that every title under the X-Men umbrella is ending this summer, to be replaced by a mere two six-issue miniseries, House of X and Powers of X (pronounced “Powers of Ten”). The intertwined plots of the books — both written by Jonathan Hickman, the architect of the relaunch — will lay out new changes for the X-Men, springing both from Professor X’s new plan for the future of all mutant kind in the present in House of X, and new revelations about mutants in the past, in Powers of X.

“There’s a big story called House of M,” X-Men senior editor Jordan D. White told Polygon in an interview, “after which mutantkind was reduced in number very greatly, and the [books] became less about acceptance by humankind and more about the fact that they were going extinct and that they might disappear as a species. That was the driving force of the X-Men, and while there have been fluctuations in that story over the years, I still think that generally that’s been the thrust of the line for quite a while. I think it was time for a change.”

After teasing his return to Marvel Comics, the publisher finally announced at C2E2 in Chicago that writer Jonathan Hickman will pen House of X and Powers of X, setting up a new chapter for the X-Men. Pepe Larraz will illustrate House of X, with R.B. Silva illustrating Powers of X. Marte Gracia will provide colors for both series.

“We are excited to have Jon back with the Marvel family, and we could not have asked for a better creative team to help usher the X-Men into a whole new era,” Marvel Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski said in a statement. “While we can’t reveal too much about the story just yet, these new stories will redefine the X-Men and their place in the Marvel Universe. This is a historic moment both new and passionate fans won’t want to miss.”

The announcement highlights pivotal X-Men stories from the past, including Giant-Size X-Men, Jim Lee and Chris Claremont's X-Men #1 from 1991, the alternate-reality event Age of Apocalypse and Grant Morrison's New X-Men. House of X and Powers of X are meant to be the next big event in the X-Men franchise, setting up Marvel's Mutants for exciting new stories down the road.

House of X #1 and Powers of X #1 will go on sale in July from Marvel Comics.
